CEO Brian Roberts on Tuesday announced that Comcast will enter the
wireless phone market by mid-2017 as a mobile virtual network operator. A
150-strong Comcast Wireless team, headed by Greg Butz, is "getting
ready next year ... to launch a WiFi and MVNO-integrated product,"
Roberts said at the Goldman Sachs Annual Communacopia Conference in New
York.

Orbi system will be available in September for $400.

Facebook's OpenCellular Offers DIY Wireless Access for Remote Regions July 14, 2016
Facebook last week introduced OpenCellular, an inexpensive, open
source wireless access platform. Telecom operators, entrepreneurs, OEMs
and researchers will be able to build, implement, deploy and operate

Nokia Buys Into Digital Health April 28, 2016
Nokia on Tuesday announced plans to purchase Withings for $192
million in cash as part of its move into the healthcare devices arena.
The deal is expected to close in early Q3, and Withings will become part
of the Nokia Technologies business. "We have said consistently that
digital health was an area of strategic interest to Nokia," CEO Rajeev
Suri said.

An international team of cybersecurity experts hacked into an
iPhone loaned to a U.S. congressman who sits on a key technology
committee, in a 60 Minutes demonstration of how easy it is for a

network vulnerability. The hackers were able to listen in on a call by
Rep. Ted Lieu just by getting the actual phone number he was using.

Samsung's AR Vision Includes Smart Contact Lenses April 12, 2016
Samsung has been granted a patent for a smart contact lens,
according to news reports published last week. The lens is equipped with
a tiny display, a camera, an antenna, and sensors that detect movement
and eye blinks. Eye blinks would provide the input, and a smartphone
would be needed to process images. A user blinks to take pictures or
interact with data displayed on the smart contact lens.

Alphabet's Sidewalk Labs, DoT Team to Ease Gridlock March 22, 2016
The U.S. Department of Transportation last week announced a
partnership with Alphabet subsidiary Sidewalk Labs to help cities ease
gridlock using Google's vast array of technology and traffic data.
Sidewalk Labs will work with the seven finalists in the DoT's Smart City
Challenge on a plan to help ease congestion and improve mobility to
disadvantaged communities under a program called "Flow."

FCC Proposes Subsidy to Close Broadband Gap March 10, 2016
FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler on Tuesday announced a $2.25 billion plan
to expand the federal Lifeline subsidy program to help low-income
consumers afford broadband Internet service. Lifeline, which currently
allows low-income consumers to buy mobile phone service at a discount,
would let them buy standalone broadband starting Dec. 1 for $9.25 per
month or apply the discount to bundled services.

Google's Loons to Glide Over India March 8, 2016
Google has been in talks with telecom service providers in India to
bring its Project Loon to the subcontinent, Rajan Anandan, Google's
managing director for Southeast Asia and India, said in an interview
published Monday. The project would deliver Internet access via balloons
floating thousands of feet in the air. It is Google's latest effort to
bring Internet access to remote parts of Asia.

Amazon's Alexa Goes to Work in 2 New Devices March 3, 2016
Amazon on Thursday announced two products, Echo Dot and Amazon Tap,
that extend the range of the Alexa-enabled home automation products
anchored by the company's Echo device, which uses voice recognition to
manage routine tasks. The Echo Dot is a small, hands-free device that
uses the same far-field voice-recognition tech as Amazon Echo. It lets
users control their stereos with voice commands.

Fresh Raspberry Pi Has Better Hardware Baked In March 1, 2016
The Raspberry Pi Foundation on Monday announced the availability of
the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B for $35, the same price as the previous
model. It is the second major upgrade to the board in just over a year.
The hardware upgrade boosts the single-core processor of the original Pi
to a faster, more capable quad-core chipset in the Pi 3. The current
model is based on a 64-bit chipset.

AT&T Jumps Into the 5G Race February 13, 2016
AT&T on Friday announced plans to start testing 5G technology,
with a possible limited commercial rollout before the end of 2016. 5G
offers the promise of besting the speeds of today's fastest wireless
networks by a factor of 10 to 100, through the use of millimeter waves,
network function virtualization, and software-defined networking.
AT&T is collaborating with Ericsson and Intel on the effort.

T-Mobile Wins OpenSignal Speed Tests February 3, 2016
T-Mobile's 700-MHz rollout has given its mobile users some of the
fastest data speeds in the U.S. market, according to a report OpenSignal
released Tuesday. OpenSignal crowdsources data on carrier signal
quality from users who have its consumer mobile application installed.
T-Mobile has the fastest 4G LTE download speeds in the country,
overtaking Verizon by a slight edge.

If I were a parent, I assume I would have a strong opposition to
giving a smartphone to an under-14 child of mine. Don't get me wrong. I
would, I surmise, be all in favor of my offspring being able to tap into

than by carrying a typical smartphone.

Starry Eyes Speedy Internet Access January 28, 2016
Project Decibel on Wednesday announced Starry, a company that
promises easy broadband Internet access at speeds of up to 1 GB with no
caps. Starry will deploy what it says is the world's first millimeter
wave band for consumer Internet communications. Initial deployment will
be a beta in Boston in the summer. Starry has an FCC license to run
pilots for 24 months in Boston and 14 other cities.

Sony Builds Smart Home Hub Into Ceiling Light January 15, 2016
Sony this week announced its Multifunctional Light, a ceiling lamp
that's kitted out with sensors to talk to smart things. It includes
sensors for motion, illumination, temperature and humidity. There's also
WiFi radio, a memory card slot, a condenser microphone, and an infrared
controller for air conditioners. The lamp form factor offers convenient
placement, said a Sony Electronics spokesperson.

New security issues that surfaced last week in connection with
Mattel's Hello Barbie doll, which talks back to kids, have heightened
fears that hackers could use the toy to steal information about its
owners and their families. The Hello Barbie app, which is available for
iOS and Android, uses an authentication credential that can be reused by
hackers, Bluebox disclosed.

4-Inch iPhone With Apple Pay May Be Coming Soon December 7, 2015
Apple will launch an iPhone with a 4-inch display and support for
Apple Pay in early 2016, according to a research note from an analyst
with a good track record of predicting Apple products. The new iPhone
model will have an A9 processor -- the same processor found in the
latest iPhone models -- and a metal casing offered in several colors,
analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities said.
